Sripuram Golden Temple situated in Vellore.

A Mahalaxmi temple called 'Sripuram' and made of more than a tonne of pure gold glittered and gleamed under the sun when it was unveiled for consecration by the Sri Narayani Peetam headed by a 31-year-old godman who calls himself Narayani Amma. Devotees hail the temple as 'one of the wonders of the world' and say that it is the only temple covered with gold. More than 400 gold and coppersmiths from the Thirupath Thirumala Devasthanam are said to have worked for six years to craft the Rs 600-crore gold temple located on 55,000 sq ft of land on a 100-acre salubrious stretch in Malaikodi, about 6 km from Vellore in North Tamil Nadu. According to official sources, the gold bars were purchased through RBI in a transparent manner.

Tallest statue of Lord Subramaniya unveiled

KUALA LUMPUR: About 30,000 Hindu devotees and visitors came to witness the official unveiling of the country’s tallest Lord Murugan statue on Jan 29, 2006 (Sunday) and the garlanding of the golden statue.

Temple officials were now hoping to get the 42.7m statue, located at the Sri Subramaniar Temple at the foot of Batu Caves, into the Guinness Book of World Records as the tallest Lord Murugan statue in the world.

Hundreds of balloons floated into the air and a shower of flowers fell from a hovering helicopter as Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu officially launched the opening ceremony about 6.15 pm on Jan 29, 2006.

A crane lifting the giant chrysanthemum garland to put over the statue

of Lord Murugan at the Sri Subramaniar Temple in Batu Caves.

As darkness fell, a spectacular 20-minute display of fireworks lit the RM2.5mil statue made of 1,550 cubic metres of concrete, 250 tonnes of steel bars and 300 litres of gold paint brought in from Thailand.

Fifteen Indian sculptors had worked on the project for three years.

A cultural performance by local artistes and singers from India continued till midnight.

Yesterday morning, just as many people turned up again at the temple to witness a giant garland being placed on the statue – two weeks before Thaipusam.

The RM15,000 flower garland, which was 43m long and weighed about a tonne, was made of chrysanthemums which will last less than a week under the hot sun.

“A total of five days without sleep and 18 men was what it took to prepare this enormous garland,” said Sri Kertanas Floral manager, Mahendran Shanti.

“One hundred and fifty people had to carry the garland to the temple.

“We needed another 20 men to help lift it to the crane so it wouldn’t sway and hit visitors,” said Mahendran, who was among those who had carried the hefty garland.

It was a complex operation and it took about an hour to hook the garland to the crane and for the crane to place the garland on the statue.

“But all the hard work was worth it as we had hoped to have the statue as well as the garland ready before Thaipusam,” said Mahendran’s wife, Shanti.

V. Malarvanan, who had sponsored the garland, said the flowers were brought in from Cameron Highlands.

“Although I wasn’t involved in the making of the garland, I was there the whole five days, to give them a little support so they wouldn’t get side-tracked,” he joked.

“I also hope that this giant garland will make it into the Malaysia Book of Records, following the successful entry of the statue into the archives,” he said.

(Bhagavad Gita Chapter IV)

All these sacrifices  of so many kinds are displayed in the sight of God; know that they all spring from action, and, comprehending this, thou shalt obtain an eternal release. O harasser of thy foes, the sacrifice through spiritual knowledge is superior to sacrifice made with material things; every action without exception is comprehended in spiritual knowledge, O son of Pritha. Seek this wisdom by doing service, by strong search, by questions, and by humility; the wise who see the truth will communicate it unto thee, and knowing which thou shalt never again fall into error. O son of Bharata, , By this knowledge thou shalt see all things and creatures whatsoever in thyself and then in me. Even if thou wert the greatest of all  sinners, thou shalt be able to cross over all sins in the bark of spiritual knowledge. As the natural fire, O Arjuna, reduceth fuel to ashes, so does the fire of knowledge reduce all actions to ashes. There is no purifier in this world to be compared to spiritual knowledge; and he who is perfected in devotion  findeth spiritual knowledge springing up spontaneously in himself in the progress of time. The man who restraineth the senses and organs and hath faith obtaineth spiritual knowledge, and having obtained it he soon reacheth supreme tranquility; but the ignorant those full of doubt and without faith, are lost. The man of doubtful mind hath no happiness either in this world or in the next or in any other. No actions bind that man who through spiritual discrimination hath renounced action and cut asunder all doubt by knowledge, O despiser of wealth.

Qur’an

103.If they had kept their Faith and guarded themselves from evil, far better had been the reward from their Lord, if they but knew!!

104. O ye of Faith! Say not (to the messenger. Words of ambiguous import, but words of respect; and hearken (to him): To those without Faith is a grievous punishment.

105. It is never the wish of those without Faith among the people of the Book, nor of the Pagans, that anything good should come down to you from your Lord. But Allah will choose for His special Mercy whom He will – for Allah is Lord of grace abounding.

106. None of Our revelations do We abrogate or cause to be forgotten, but We substitute something better or similar: Knowest thou not that Allah Hath power over all things?

107. Knowest thou not that to Allah belongeth the  dominion of the heavens and the earth? And besides Him ye have neither patron nor helper.

108. Would ye question your Messenger as Moses was questioned of old? But whoever changeth from Faith to Unbelief, Hath strayed without doubt from the even way.

109. Quite a number of the People of the Book wish they could Turn you (people) back to infidelity after ye have believed from selfish envy, after  the truth hath become Manifest unto them: But forgive and overlook, Till Allah accomplish His purpose; for Allah Hath power over all things.

110. And be steadfast in prayer and regular in charity; And whatever good ye send forth for your souls before you, ye shall find it with Allah.

“Prayers restrains one from shameful and unjust deeds; and remembrance of God is the greatest thing in life, without doubt.”

The Baha’I Faith ………..Words of wisdom by Baha’u’llah

  • O Son Of Man! Ascend unto My heaven, that thou mayest obtain the joy of reunion, and from the chalice of imperishable glory quaff the peerless wine.

  • O Son of Man! Many a day hath passed over thee whilst thou hast busied thyself with the fancies and idle imaginings. How long art thou to slumber on thy bed? Lift up thy head from slumber, for the Sun has risen to the Zenith, haply it may shine upon thee with the light of beauty.

  • O Son of Man! The light hath shone on thee from the horizon of the sacred Mount and the spirit of enlightenment hath breathed in the Sinai of thy heart. Where fore, free thyself from the veils of idle fancies and enter into My court, that thou mayest be fit for everlasting life and worthy to meet Me. Thus may death not come upon thee, neither weariness nor trouble.

  • O Son of Man! My eternity is My creation, I have created it for thee. Make it the garment of thy temple. My unity is My handiwork; I have wrought it for thee; Clothe thyself therewith, that thou mayest be to all eternity the revelation of My everlasting being.

  • O Son of Man! My majesty is My gift to thee, and My grandeur the token of My mercy unto thee. That which beseemeth Me none shall understand, nor can any one recount. Verily, I have preserved it in My hidden storehouses and in the treasuries of My command, as a sign of My loving-kindness unto My servants and My mercy unto My people.

Part II

O Ye people that have minds to know and ears to hear! The first all of the Beloved is this: O mystic nightingale! Abide not but in the rose-garden of the spirit. O messenger of the Solomon of love! Seek thou no shelter except in the Sheba of the well-beloved, and O immortal phoenix! Dwell not save on the mount of faithfulness. Therein is thy habitation, if on the wings of  thy soul thou soarest to the realm of the infinite and seekest to attain thy goal.

O Son of Spirit! The bird seeketh its nest; the nightingale the charm of the rose; whilst those birds, the hearts of men, content with transient dust, have strayed far from their eternal next, and with eyes turned towards the slough of heedlessness are bereft of the glory of the divine presence. Alas! How strange and pitiful: for a mere cupful, they have turned away from the billowing seas of the Most High, and remained far from he most effulgent horizon.

O Friend! In the garden of thy heart plant naught but the rose of love, and from the nightingale of affection and desire loosen not thy hold. Treasure  the companionship of the righteous and eschew all fellowship with the ungodly.

O Son of Justice! Whither can a lover go but to the land of his beloved? And what seeker findeth restaway from his heart’s desire? To the true lover reunion is life, and separation is death. His breast is void of patience and his heart hath no peace. A myriad lives he would forsake to hasten to the abode of his beloved.

Khandogya Upanishad

Part 1: First Prapathaka Second Khanda

  • When the Devas and Asuras struggled together, both of the race of Pragapati, the Devas took the udgitha (Om), thinking they would vanquish the Asuras with it.

  • They meditated on the udgitha as the breath (scent) in the nose, but the Asuras pierced it with evil. Therefore we smell by the breath in the nose both what is good smelling and what is bad smelling. For the breath was pierced by evil.

  • Then they mediated on the udgitha as speech, but the Asuras pierced it with evil. Therefore we speak both truth and falsehood. For speech is pierced by evil.

  • Then they meditated on the udgitha as the eye, but the Asuras pierced it with evil. Therefore we see both what is sightly and unsightly. For the eye is pierced by evil.

  • Then they meditated on the udgitha as the ear, but the Asuras pierced it with evil. Therefore we hear both what should be heard and what should not be heard. For the ear is pierced by evil.

  • Then they meditated on the udgitha as the mind, but the Asuras pierced it with evil. Therefore we conceive both what should be conceived and what should not be conceived. For the mind is pierced by evil.

  • Then comes this breath (of life) in the mouth. They meditated on the udgitha as that breath. When the Asuras came to it, they were scattered, as (a ball of earth) would be scattered when hitting a solid stone..

  • Thus, as a ball of earth is scattered when hitting on a solid stone, will he be scattered who wishes evil to one who knows this, or who persecutes him; for he is a solid stone.

SRI SUDHINDRA UVACHA --- Guidelines to Youth

Youth is the most precious period in a person's life. It should not be wasted in any way. On the contrary, it should be put to the fullest use, to make one's life happy and successful. In youth, one has great energy and enthusiasm and good health. When old age creeps in, although a person may have intelligence, money and all other resources, declining health, lack of the same degree of enthusiasm as in youth come in the way of great accomplishments.

Young people should cultivate good habits which will last them for a lifetime. For instance, getting up early in the morning, cleanliness of the body, regular prayers and worship of God are good habit to be cultivated in young age. These habits lay a solid foundation for a happy and successful life.

.For good health, regular physical excercise is necessary in youth, one should cultivate such a habit of regular exercise. The body functions properly only when it goes through the routine of daily exercise. Such daily exercise helps digestion of food, keeps the limbs in good shape for an active life, and contributes to a healthy life. The benefits of regular exercise and a healthy life become all the more evident as old age slowly replaces youth.

The biggest enemy of youth is idleness. It should be shunned as poison. Idleness in youth does not mean merely lack if any purposeful work. Idleness in young age turns the mind of youth to evil and destructive activities. Every moment of life should be engaged in doing one's duty and useful work.

Apart from doing one's duty well, young age is the proper time to learn to serve others. Service of one's fellow human beings is an integral part of a happy life. There are innumerable opportunities to serve society. It is a way in which one helps the less fortunate or those who need help. Service teaches one may virtues such as humility and love. These virtues help one lead a happy life, particularly in old age.

Service to one's fellow-human beings is one of the best ways of pleasing God. Young people should learn to distinguish between good and had, and avoid all evil in life. Bad qualities like gossip should be avoided with determination.

                                                           Excerpts from talks by

                                                     PRAMUKH SWAMI MAHARAJ

Our own happiness lies in the happiness of others; Our advancement lies in the advancement of others; Our good lies in the good of others.

******

If you have good character, everyone will come to have love for you and your faith in God and righteousness will be consolidated. You will experience happiness in proportion to the degree of your obedience to God’s will; otherwise, you will have no peace even in the company of God or a God-like saint.

******

Students should take great care. If one leads a good life, society will become good. If youthful years are taken good care of, there will be no worry in the future.

******

Compared to monetary abundance earned by dishonest means, plain bread honestly earned is more gratifying.

******

With steadfast character, one’s studies too are bound to improve. With our life lived within the bounds of divine law, our efforts will surely attract God’s help.

******

The tendency to look at each other’s faults should be abandoned; we should look at each other’s good qualities.

******

Our stomachs should not be garbage cans in which everything is thoughtlessly dumped. Eat wisely and judiciously.

******

Wish everybody well and you will fare well. Wish them ill and you will come to grief.

******

If elders in the family behave well, children too will follow suit. Practice is the best preacher.

******

Never take anything lying unclaimed. If you do, you will be inclined to steal even from somebody’s home.

******

Do not try to look fashionable with clothes and long hair. Rather, turn efforts to looking good in the eyes of God.

******

Only through adversity, one can become a well-moulded personality; if a potter kneads the clay well, the pot takes good shape.

Just as parents look lovingly upon obedient children, God and His holy saint cast their loving eye on those who do their will.

******

It is in youth that you can worship God; you can do nothing in old age.

******

Riches do not make a man cultured. He is truly cultured when his life is filled with righteousness.

******

In order to be freed from the bondage of Maya (delusion) you have to accept the bondage of God.

******

If someone went looking for a job with beautiful clothes and well-groomed hair as his qualifications, would he get one? There, they demand you be worthy and experienced. Likewise, it is no good moving around superficially – looking good, etc. only righteousness makes your life truly respectable.

******

Bread earned by the sweat of your brow will bring true peace. Whatever is earned through honest work will stay and everything else will go the same way it has come.

******

If you want to make your heart the seat of God, make your life pure. Religion makes your life pure.

******

It is no use preaching what you do not practice. Teachers and professors today forbid smoking, telling students about its harmfulness; yet they smoke themselves as soon as they are outside the classroom!

******

What use will their preaching be? So long as knowledge is merely verbal, it will not prove profitable in our lives.

******

If you indulge in addiction, you will be unhappy and you will make your family, society and the nation unhappy. That is why we forbid addictions.

He is a demon who wickedly wishes to misappropriate others’ belongings. He who gives is a God. Do good to everybody and you will surely fare well.

******

So long as our life has not become pure and pious, we shall never get good thoughts, without which how are we to go near God?

******

Money, power and affluence will bring you no such joy as you will get from seeing and hearing the good things of people. This vision comes only from close communion with a true saint.

******

With soap, you can clean your body; but what about deceit and impurity in the mind? Satsang is the soap to cleanse our minds.

******

Atheism as well as bad company has done nobody any good – be it a village, a family, a society or a nation; godlessness makes for no progress and development. When godlessness comes, money goes.

******

Good repute will be on the downward path. Therefore, shun godlessness and bad company and keep good company.

******

People put money in banks, trusting that it will bring interest, but they cannot trust God! With faith and trust, we could never part with God.

******

Commune with such a person as would increase your love for the spiritually great; promote reverence for Satsang; make sure you realize the true greatness of God and religion.

******

The incense stick burns itself and gives fragrance. Man’s life must be one of sacrifice and benevolence.

Guru Nanak Dev
The founder guru of the Sikhs

How can we describe Him? How can we know Him?  O Nanak, everyone speaks of Him, each one wiser than the rest. Great is the Master, Great is His Name. Whatever happens is according to His Will. O Nanak, one who claims to know everything shall not be decorated in the world hereafter.

There are nether worlds beneath nether worlds, and hundreds of thousands of heavenly worlds above. The Vedas say that you can search and search for them all, until you grow weary. The scriptures say that there is only One Universe. If you try to write an account of this, you will surely finish yourself before you finish writing it. O Nanak, call Him Great! He Himself knows Himself.

The praisers praise the Lord, but they do not obtain intuitive understanding the streams and rivers flowing into the kings and emperors, with mountains of property and oceans of wealth—these are not even equal to an ant, who does not  forget God.

Endless are His praises, endless are those who speak them, Endless are His Actions, endless are His Gifts. Endless is His Vision, endless is His hearing. His limits cannot be perceived. What is the Mystery of His Mind? The limits of the created universe cannot be perceived. Its limits here and beyond cannot be perceived. Many struggle to know His limits, but His limits cannot be found. No one can know these limits. The more you say about them, the more there still remains to be said. Great is the Master, High is His heavenly Home. Highest of the High, above all is His Name. Only one as Great and as High as God can know His Lofty and Exalted State.

( Guru Granth Sahib )

Thus spoke Jesus Christ

Old Testament: Genesis I

In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth.

The earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters.

Then God said, “Let there be light;” and there was light.

And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness.

God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening   and there was morning, the first day.

And God said, “Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters,”

So God made the dome and separated the waters that were under the dome from the waters that were above the dome. And it was so.

God called the dome Sky. And there was evening   and there was morning, the second day.

And God said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear,” And it was so.

God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good.

Then God said, “Let the earth put forth vegetation; plants yielding seed, and fruit trees of every kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it.” And it was so.

The earth brought forth vegetation; plants yielding seed of every kind, and trees of every kind bearing fruit with the seed in it. And God saw that it was good.

Genesis 2

The man gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the air, and to every animal of the field; but for the man there was not found a helper as his partner.

So the LORD God caused  a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then he took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh.

And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man.

Then the man said, “This at last is bone  of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called Woman, for out of Man this one was taken”.

Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and clings to his wife, and they become one flesh.

And the man and his wife were both naked, and were not ashamed.

Genesis 3

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other wild animal that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God say, “You shall not eat from any tree in the garden?

The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden;

But God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden, nor shall you touch it, or you shall die.”

But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not die;

For God knows that  when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil”.

Raga Asa

One universal creator god. Truth is the name. Creative being personified. No fear. No hatred. Image of the undying, beyond birth. Self-existent. By guru’s grace:

Ragg Aasaa, First Mehl, First House, So Dar – That Gate:

What is that Gate, and what is that Home, in which You sit and take care of all? Countless musical instruments of so many various kinds vibrate there for you; so many are the musicians there for you. There are so many ragas there for You, along with their accompanying harmonies; so many minstrels sing to You. The winds sing to You, as do water and fire; the Righteous Judge of Dharma sings at Your Door. Chitar and Gupat, the recording angels of the conscious and the subconscious, sing to You; they know, and they write, and on the basis of what they write, the Lord of Dharma passes judgement. Shiva  and Brahma and the Goddess Parvaati, so beautiful and ever adorned by You, sing to You. The Indras, seated upon their celestial thrones, with the deities at your Gate, sing to You. The Siddhas in Samaadhi sing to You, and the Holy Saints, in their contemplative meditation, sing to You. The celibates, the truthful and the patient.

Shree Aniruddha Bapu

" I am just a normal man "

----- Shree Aniruddha Bapu

GOVIDYAPEETHAM

Under the invaluable guidance of Sadguru Shree Aniruddha, the Sadguru Shree Aniruddha Upasana Trust has launched the Shree Govidyapeetham Project. A 16 acre area in the vicinity of Karjat has been designated for the purpose. This unique project intends to make use of sophisticated equipment like the laboratory, the chiller room, etc. only as and when the need may arise. All activity will otherwise be conducted in natural surroundings.

The two essential aspects of the Govindyapeetham project are :
1) Gopalavidya 2) Shree Govindavidya or in other words, " Facets of the life of Shree Krishna"

Gopalavidya : The Indian culture worships the cow believing her to be divine and a source of life and energy.Modern science too emphasizes the importance of and values the cow, her milk, her excretory products, viz. The Gomutra and the Gomaya. Balram is known to have reared and groomed the "Gir" breed of milch cows. The Gopalavidya too aims at grooming and nuturing the cow and conducting research in the field. The project will also focus on a comprehensive study of our culture that associates sanctity with the cow and believes her to be a source of vital energy. Actual rearing activity with the help of modern amenities and equipment will also be undertaken with a view to understand well, all aspects involved in this 'vidya' of rearing and grooming cows. Not only the Hindu religious texts but also the Jain, the Parsee and the Sikh sacred texts too recognize and believe the cow to be a divine and holy being. It is also an accepted fact that the cow with all its goodness has a general virtuous effect on our lives and can thus lead to the welfare of the entire humanity.

Govindavidya : Govinda is Shree Krishna. His persona, His life, His powers, His role, His ideology and His value system put together compose the Govindavidya. To study the Govindavidya. And arouse thereby 'love', love for Shree Krishna and to become aware of and feel His love for us is  indeed the primary goal of this project. Govidyapeetham is the foundation on which 'bhakti', 'dharma' and valour will flourish. The architect of this design is none other than Shree Krishna Himself …..and so none other than the Poornavatar Aniruddha who has come with Sudarshan Chakra.

Prominent features of the Govidyapeetham.

# A magnificent temple of Shree Krishna bearing the Govardhan mountain on His little finger,
will be built on the 16 acre land at Shree Kshetra Kothimbe , near Karjat.
# The darshan of the Gurus of Sadguru Shree Aniruddha in 10 of the forms He had assumed at
various different times alongwith the darshan of the of the mates of Shree Krishna.
# The study and research of Gopalavidya and Govinavidya.
# Striving towards a solution to the problems that life is faced with today, falling back on the
Bhagwat Geeta ( told to Arjun to indicate to him, his duty, his dharma) and the Uddhav Geeta
or the bhagvat ( told to Uddhav to till and prepare the terrain of his mind) as frames of reference,
will be an important endeavor of the Govidyapeetham.
# The actual rearing and grooming with help of modern equipment, of the Gir breed of milch cows will be undertaken for the purpose of an in-depth and a comprehensive study of the various aspects of the Gopalavidya of Shree Krishna. To drive home to the masses and to reiterate the importance of the milk, the curds, the butter, the buttermilk and the ghee, all made from the milk of the cow is one of the principle tasks of the Govidyapeetham.
# The revival and restoration of ancient Indian wealth, unfortunately lost in the tide of time, viz.
Ancient vidyas like the Govidya, the Gomatividya, the Gayatrividya alongwith some effective
mantras like the Gosukta, the Gomatimantra, the Surabhimantra and the Gayatrimantra is an
important objective of the project.
# Physical training and exercise alongwith the training in the ancient martial arts are part of the
curriculum and will be conducted in the midst of nature.

In the Dwapar age, Lord Krishna initiated new times that moulded the social order and were based on a new philosophy and a new value system These were times that had our culture and values at the helm and core. May the vidya of the great Shree Krishna, the author of this new era be fruitful. The Govidyapeetham takes up this thought at its very basic intent.

The events of the life of Shree Krishna portay His dharma undoubtedly leading to the achievement of Purushartha, does eventually even lead to moksha or liberation. The Govidyapeetham too is his very own design . It is Shree Krishna's, Lord Mahavishnu's and so Sadguru Aniruddha's.

Maya of Vedanta

The Vedantins say that Maya is the Sakti of illusion premised in Siva. Maya has no independent existence. Having brought out the illusion of the world as real, she continues to play upon the ignorance of the victims. When the reality of her not being is found. She disappears. “Recognition” says that Sakti (Power) is coeval with Siva. The one does not exist without the other. Siva is unmanifested whereas Sakti is manifest on account of ‘Her’ independent will ‘Swantantra’.Her manifestation is display of the cosmos on pure conciousness like images in the mirror. The images cannot remain in the absence of the mirror. So also the world cannot have an independent existence. Swantantra becomes eventually an attribute of the Supreme.

Sri Sankara says that Absolute is without attributes and that Maya is not and has no real being. What is the difference between the two? Both agree that the display is not real. The images of the mirror cannot in anyway be real. The world does not exist in reality. Both schools mean the same thing.

Their ultimate aim is to realise the Absolute Consciousness. The unreality of the Cosmos is implied in Recognition (Pratibhijna), Whereas it is explicit in Vedanta. If the world be taken as ‘Chit’ (consciousness), it is always real. Vedanta says there is no ‘Nama’ (diversity) meaning that it is all the same Reality. There is agreement on all points except in words and the method of expression.

Saints of India

Thiruvalluvar – the rishi of Thirukkural

Thiruvalluvar’s Thirukkural is known as Tamil Marai- the Tamil Veda. These couplets were
composed around the first century AD and were compiled in second century by various poets
Thiruvallur’s parents, viz., Bhagavan, a Brahmin family, lived in Mylapur in Chennai. Thiruvalluvar
was the youngest of the six siblings. Thiruvalluvar’s sister Avaiyaar was a poetess and famous
for her classic compositions on alphabet. For example, for the first letter A she wrote Aramseya
virumbu – ‘be religious’. For AA Aaruvadhu sinam – ‘control your temper’. For ‘E’ – Eyalvadu
karavel’ “be kind to all” and so on. In one of her poems, Avaiyaar wrote, “The palm tree is tall and
its seeds are big. Yet it cannot provide shadow to even a single head. The Banyan tree is shorter
and its seeds are very small. Yet it can provide shadow to a whole army. Thiruvalluvar’s wife Vasuki
is also legendarily famous for her unquestioning obedience to Thiruvalluvar.

Thiruvalluvar was a weaver by profession. One day while selling his produces in the market, the
spoilt brat of a rich merchant came there. He took up a piece of cloth and asked for the price,
“Rs  2  said Thiruvalluvar. Immediately, the boy tore the cloth in two pieces and  asked for the price
of each half. “One rupee” calmly replied Thiruvalluvar. Irked by his calmness, the boy tore the pieces
once more and asked for price again. “Eight annas”. Was the calm reply. This went on till the cloth
piece turned into shreds. Unable to shake Thiruvalluvar’s calmness, the boy offered to compensate
him by paying Rs 2. “For producing this cloth, a series of people toiled from cultivating cotton to
making thread and then only I could weave the cloth. They all worked to serve the need of somebody.
Can you compensate for all these wasted labour? You may of course replace a spoilt cloth by another
one, but you cannot replace a spoilt life. Try to mend your ways’. The serenity of his behaviour made
the brat a totally changed person. Seeing the change in the boy, his father was overjoyed. He searched
out Thiruvalluvar to express his gratitude and requested him to always guide the boy. Everyday, the boy
would come to Thiruvalluvar and he taught him some beautiful couplets. These couplets were later
complied as Thirukkural.

Thirukkural has three parts Dharma, Artha and Kama. The fourth purushartha “Mokhsha” has been
dealt in ‘Yati’ section in “Dharma”. There are a total of 133 chapters in Thirukkural  -  38 on Dharma,
70 on Artha and 25 on Kama. Each chapter has 10 couplets making it a total of 1330 couplets.
Thiruvalluvar is unique in his praise of human ability and Grihasthashrama. “He only is strong who
dares to accomplish the difficult. The world belongs to one who can fully sense and perceive the
magnificence of sound, light, touch, taste, and smell. By properly performing the duties of a householder,
you can achieve salvation without renunciation or penance” “It’s the householders who support the
other three ashramas, viz. brahmacharya, vanaprastha and sannyas”.

Thirukkural has been translated in most Indian and many foreign languages. It was translated even in
Latinby C J Besco in 1760. Foreign critics like Charles E Gower, M Ariel, Fredrick Pinkot, Dr GU
Pope have praised the book most lavishly.

SACRED WORDS

“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed.  I want the cultures of all lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible.  But I refuse to live in other people’s houses as an interloper, a beggar or a slave’.

-          Mahatma Gandhi

‘When we have learnt about the times we are passing through, known him who is teaching us, learnt which kind of gain we make by which kind of action and have faith in the truth of all these processes and facts of knowledge, there shall be no scope for musing over the pros and cons.  Excessive pondering is usually a sign of insufficient faith and superficial understanding.

-          Raja Yogi B K Jagdish Chander.

‘My opinion is a view I hold until – well –until I find out something that changes it.

                                                                                     -          Luigi Pirandello

“It is a great degradation to be conceited.  Look at the crow – how wise it thinks itself to be. It never falls into a snore.  It flies off at the slightest approach of danger and steals food with the greatest dexterity.  But the poor creature cannot help eating filth.  This is the result of being overwise or having the wisdom of a pettifogger.”

-          Sri RamaKrishna.

“Love and humility are more dignified and divine ways of dealing with people.  Our life should, therefore be so modeled that out of love for us, and not because of fear of us, people work heart and soul while we, on our parts, should become worthy, and be able to teach others to work, by ourselves turning out good amounts of work.”

-          Raja Yogi B K Jagdish Chander

“The moment you think you have seen everything or know it all, the universe senses arrogance and gives you a great big dose of humility.  You must give upon the idea that you can ever become so enlightened that you have nothing left to learn.

-          Cherie Carter Scott.

“What is the first business of philosophy? To part with self conceit.  For it is impossible for any one to learn to begin to learn what he thinks that he already knows.”

                                                                                    -         Epictetus

“While you are still beautiful and life still woos, it is such a fine gesture of disdainful pride to jilt it.

-          Eugene O’neill

“When I speak of discipline, I’m reforming to self-discipline not discipline that’s externally imposed on you by someone else.  Also, I’m referring to discipline that’s applied in order to overcome your negative qualities.  A criminal gang may need discipline to perform a successful robbery, but that discipline is useless.”

-        Dalai Lama.

“Freedom is not procured by a full enjoyment of what is desired, but by controlling the desire”.

-         Epictetus.

“There is a raging tiger inside every man whom god put on this earth.  Every man worthy of the respect of his children spends his life building inside himself a cage to pen that tiger in.”

-          Murray Kempton

“Abandon all supports and look to me for protection.  I shall purify you from the sins of the past, do not grieve.”

-          Bhagavad Gita 18.66

“To fear god and commune with him is the whole secret of faith for those who serve the cause of the true god.”

-          Michi-no-Shiori.

“For most of us, fear is a part of our mental make-up.  Fear is a poison that quickly circulates the entire system, paralysing the will, producing a queer sensation in some part or the other of the human body.  Yes, fear is the cause of many diseases.  Fearlessness ensures health.  Do not fear.  For god is near”!

-          Dada J P Vaswani.

“Anger, conceit, greed, jealousy, fear, hatred and passion – all these are our emotions.  The mind would reflect the pattern of our emotion.  The fundamental thing is not mind but the emotion, which is the powerful factor that reflects our existence our consciousness, our inner being.  The purity of the emotion is the secret formula of health.”

-          Acharya Mahaprajna

“Behind everything we feel there is always a sense of fear.”

-          Ugo Betti

“The terror of society, which is the basis of morals, the terror of god, which is the secret of religion – these are two things that govern us”.

-          Oscar Wilde

“While men are ruled by fear they strive to prevent the very changes that will abate.”

-          Alan Paton

“To whatever extent the five senses, the four taints of emotions, and the four instinctive appetites are suppressed by a person who is well established in the path of righteousness, to such extent the doorway for the entrance of evil is closed for that person.”

-          Acarangasutra 4.15
