Homoeopathy

There are innumerable myths in the minds of the layman about homoeopathy. The most common one being that homoeopathy is a natural but a slow cure patronized by a select few who have a proclivity for all things natural. You could not be further from the truth. Consider this information on homoeopathy. Studies indicate that approximately 10 per cent of the Indian population depend solely on homoeopathy for their health care needs and the sale of homoeopathic medicines has more than doubled in recent years. There are today around 1,86,000 registered homoeopathic medical practitioners, around 9,000 hospitals and dispensaries and more than 850 homeopathic drug manufacturing units in India. Staggering statistics for what is thought of as a path less travelled.

Educational requirements
The Central Council of Homoeopathy, the governing body of homoeopathy in India has  introduced the following courses in homoeopathy.

  • The degree course in Homoeopathy (BHMS) is of four and half years followed by compulsory internship of one year duration, after passing the final degree examination. The admission qualification for BHMS is Intermediate Science (10+2) with Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects or equivalent.

  • The post graduate degree course in homoeopathy, MD (Hom), spreads over three years duration including one year house job or equivalent.

The Central Government also has in the pipeline, a pharmacy course in homeopathy to take care of the lacuna in homoeopathic pharmacopoeia. A three month nursing course based on homoeopathic line of treatment is also in the offing.

There are around 160 registered colleges in India of which 42 are in the state of Maharashtra. Almost all the colleges are private colleges and the admissions to these colleges in the last couple of years are based on the 12th standard results and the Combined Entrance Test (CET) conducted by the State Government. The allocation of seats is according to merit in the CET.

There are 15 Post Graduate Colleges in India, five of which are in Maharashtra. Few of the colleges where you can pursue homoeopathy are:

  • Smt Chandaben MohanBhai Patel Homoeopathic Medical College, Iria, RC Gadkari Marg, Vile Parle (West). Mumbai-400 056.

  • Yerala Homoeopathic medical College and Research Centre, Triveni Sangam Building, Currey Road, Mumbai-440 012.

Design

There have been tremendous opportunities in design, ever since the economy opened up to foreign competition. Design is a broad term applicable to any sphere of activity where aesthetics and creativity are required. The dress you wear, the house you live in, the chair you sit on, the car you drive, the cover of your new compact disc, the graphics of the films you watch – all these diverse elements have one thing in common – they all have some elements of design. Furniture, clothes, jewellery, ceramics, interiors, textiles, graphics, as well as video programmes-you name it and design is an integral part of it. Moreover, computers have literally taken over the world of design and, thus, computer literacy is a must for entering this profession.

Education News

Management students may have a lot to look forward to this June, when XLRI Jamshedpur, using the satellite based broadband technology of Hughes Escorts Communications Ltd (HECL) will offer certificate and other management programme courses replicating a traditional  ‘live and interactive’ classroom environment. While the content will be provided by XLRI, the campus studio in Jamshedpur, network and other services will be set up by HECL under the brand name DirecWay Global Education.

XLRI and HECL formally launched their association last month by inviting XLRI alumni, HECL customers and other senior managers from the industry to a seminar on “Managing Talent”. Live broadcast video and audio interactivity were used to interact with over 70 participants spread across HECL’s classrooms in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Kolkata.

The association will take XLRI’s management training and education programmes to classrooms all across India. The biggest advantage for working professionals is that they will not have to quit their jobs or their cities to do so. Yet, they will attend XLRI programmes similar to what would have been offered at the campus.

In the run-up to the launch of the XLRI courses, HECL is organizing a series of  management development programmes. Management expert Prof. Sharad Sarin will conduct the first MDP, on Customer Relationship Management, on April 11-12 at HECL’s Gurgaon studio.
