C.A. is a professional degree granted by The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India which has been established by an Act of Parliament for the purpose of regulating the profession of Chartered Accountants in the country. The Institute enrolls students for the pre-professional course of Chartered Accountancy. The Foundation course is of a duration of 10 months, which can be joined by students who have just cleared their 12^th std. Examinations. The main professional course is of three years duration and is a blend of theoretical and practical training. The practical training involves working in the office of a Chartered Accountant in practice or a firm of such Chartered Accountants. A part of the training can also be taken in certain approved business or industrial enterprises. The duration of such training is 3 years. The theoretical part consists of clearing various papers, which are divided in two stages, Intermediate and Final. A Student of Intermediate level has to clear 6 papers in one or more sittings. The examinations are conducted by the Institute itself at various centres, twice in each year, in the month of May and November. After clearing Intermediate, students have to clear 8 papers of Final level. After clearing all the papers of Final and on successful completion of the training, one is qualified as a Chartered Accountant.
