Shagun Money (Gujarati wedding ritual) According to Gujarati marriage rituals, when the couple returns to the groom's house after the wedding ceremony, the entrance is blocked by the groom's sisters. They playfully refuse to let the bride enter the house until they receive token shagun (good omen) money from their brother. After the bride enters the house, she is blessed by all the elders present and her mother-in-law gifts her gold or a saree as a welcome gesture.
*It is believed in India that applying henna on the hands and feet of the bride protect her from the evil eye. *It is customary to smear the bride and the groom with sandal and turmeric paste individually as it acts as a beautifying and purifying process. *As per western traditions, the groom carries the bride across the threshold of the home to protect her from evil spirits lurking below.
