Kumarakom: Capital of God’s own country!

By Clint Thomas

By early June the southwest monsoon breaks and there are three months of wind and water with short spells of sharp, glittering sunshine that thrilled children snatch to play with. The countryside turns an immodest green. Boundaries blur as tapioca fences take root and bloom. Brick walls turn mossgreen. Pepper vines snake up electric poles. Wild creepers burst through latente banks and spill across the flooded roads. Boats ply in the bazaars…thus Arundhati Roy begins her Booker Prize winner – The God of Small Things. Although the novel - which is set in Ayemenem village adjoining Kumarakom - does not render the unspeakable beauty of Kumarakom, aren’t the aforementioned words enough to lure you to the most beautiful place in Kerala (arguably)? And If I say Kumarakom is the capital of the God's own country, will you disagree?

Well, honestly, this is my fourth trip to Kumarakom, with an intention of doing a photoblog on Yahoo! Strangely, it had been raining all these four times, maybe, to make me realize that the beauty and majesty of Kumarakom are at its best during monsoon.

And this time, I’m in a houseboat, the perfect place for chilling out -and much more ;-). Houseboats are big barges with five-star amenities –air conditioned bedrooms with contemporary bathrooms, modular kitchens that prepare the choicest Kerala-style food, home theatre and whatever else you want. Some of them have as many as five bedrooms, some have conference halls and some are even double-storied.

Every here and there you see a fisherman, hounding for Karimeen (pearl spot). The boat captain excitedly explained to us four different methods to catch a pearl spot fish and how clinically they do it. Interesting!

At the prow of the houseboat sits Sreehari, 15, after whose name the boat is named. He doesn’t just share his name with the boat, but he owns it! The young guy too has his share of knowledge to impart – about Tiger Prawns, another taste of the Kumarakom. He flashes his torch into the water, toward the stone wall of the canal’s side and I see two small bulbs flashing between two stones. And he says those are the eyes of a Tiger Prawn. Wow!

Before I clicked this photo, it never occurred to me that lightning is the best source of light for night photography. Yes, this photo was clicked at 11:40 pm, there was lightening and the photo came out like this.

It may be the company of boatmen, the palatable Karimeen (pearl spot) fry, mouth-watering tiger prawns curry, a bottle of chilled beer from the boatmen’s icebox, a romantic night with your other half, or the cruise across the Vembanad Lake , Kumarakom guarantees you something to cherish for a lifetime.

What Does a $500 Million Golf Course Look Like?

Most expensive links ever are on the ocean - literally

By Larry Olmsted

Even Jules Verne could not have seen this one coming.

Dutch Docklands, a player in the world of floating technologies, (or making land where there was no land), has announced plans to build a $500 million floating golf course off the Maldives coast. While there are plenty of golf courses that claim to be “on” the water, this one would quite literally be atop the Indian Ocean .

The concept is a series of man-made islands with one or more holes on each, linked by transparent undersea tunnels. Golfers walk or ride through these submerged pathways, taking in the seafloor sights while pondering which iron to use next. And the clubhouse? You’ll have to take an elevator to the sea bottom to get to it. At half a billion dollars, it will be by far the most expensive golf course ever built.

The floating golf mecca, which is scheduled to be open for play in 2013, will be run by industry leader Troon Golf, the gold standard of international high-end golf course and club management. The yet-to-be-named project is part of a larger government-approved development which will include 200 villas and about 45 private islands off the Maldives coast.

In historic terms, our understanding of golf excess first shifted in 1990, when the Las Vegas wunderkind Steve Wynn built mega-course Shadow Creek. To say no expense was spared in construction is a gross understatement. It is said Wynn gave architect Tom Fazio a blank check and a blank desert canvas. Serious earth moving on the 320-acre site boosted the elevation from less than six feet to more than 213 feet. Nearly 21,000 fully mature trees, mostly pines and cottonwoods, were transplanted. While no numbers were released, the best guess in the business is that Shadow Creek cost about $40 million to build, then the most expensive course in history. That’s about $70 million today or less than one-seventh of the proposed Maldives course cost.

These days the title of most expensive golf course on earth belongs to one of two New Jersey neighbors (private clubs do not have to release cost reports). The number $250 million has been tossed around for valuations of Liberty National, the pet project of Reebok founder Paul Fireman. The ultra-exclusive course is known for its granite walking bridges and $500,000 joining free. Nearby Bayonne Golf Club has merely been rumored to have cost in the $150 million-plus range, mainly due to a huge undersea dredging project required as part of the permitting. If the new Dutch Docklands project comes to fruition – even on budget – these bragging rights will have to move halfway around the world.

Down under to Australia

Go to Australia, lying upside down on its back at the bottom end of the world. Australia is more than beaches, barrier reefs and beer. It's large and lively. Last year about 60,000 Indians visited Australia, making them the third largest tourist group in Asia. They went for holidays and honeymoon, employment and education, and business and beaches. And for some, it was the sparkling Australian nightlife, always attractive, always Australia.

The population of Australia is 19.5 million.

Every nationality except New Zealanders need visas.

Any time is a good time to be in Australia. Summer (December to February) can get uncomfortably hot, but its a great beach weather.

With distances between cities so great, flying is the most favoured and speedy option, although buses and trains provide a more scenic, if lengthy alternative.

Mumbai to Melbourne return airfare (economy class) by Quantas Airways is Rs.20,699+taxes; business is Rs.1,52,565 (basic fare).

People flock to 'Niagra of India' Hogenakkal in Karnataka

Hogenakkal (Karnataka): Known as the 'Niagara Falls of India', the Hogenakkal waterfall in the Dharmapuri district is a popular tourist destination.

The waterfall amidst the lush green and serene surroundings makes it an idyllic and excellent excursion destination for tourists-both domestic and foreign.

However, weekends here are rather fast paced as the place is chock- a- block with people, coming here to soak in the water showers or enjoy a boat ride.

Besides providing a perfect leisure spot, the waterfall is known for its healing properties. People suffering from skin ailments especially come here to take a herbal power shower.

"The water here is excellent. It flows through various places. Taking a bath in the fall is good as the water has medicinal properties. The water comes here from Baramandla covering a distance of 350 kilometres. It flows through various places," said Sathyanarayan, a visitor.

Tourists especially from Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh come here to enjoy a boat ride on the lake, which receives water from the fall.

"The lake is very nice and we enjoyed it a lot. It's a fantastic place, especially the boating and all is very good. The valleys and the falls here are simply superb," says Beena, a tourist.

The tourists who want a bit more thrill prefer an upstream boat ride through the water falling from a high altitude.

SIKKIM…. Abode of the Gods

From monarchy to a democratic state in the federal structure of India, Sikkim has come a long way. If 1975 was the year Sikkim turned its back on Rajtantra when the state was merged with India, 1994 was the year for the hill state to establish itself as a Ganatantra, when the Sikkim Democratic Front came to power.

Sikkim has withstood the rigours of a nascent state. Today in the mainstream of the Indian social, political and economic canvas, the state sits pretty in its statehood. The grandeur is laced with tranquility even as the border state stands guard protecting the sovereignty of the country.

Of mountains, rivers, lakes and vales…..
Sikkim’s physical features can be divided into mountains, rivers, glaciers, lakes and waterfalls.

Mountains :
Sikkim has a rugged topography and flat lands are difficult to come by. The towering mountains that hem this paradise of nature, pose a problem to efficient agriculture. The two mountain ranges are:
Singilela: on the Western border
Chola: on the Eastern border

The Singelila Range boasts of the 8596 metres Mount Khangchendzonga. This peak, the third highest in the world, is difficult to climb because of unpredictable weather and winds.

The Sikkimese believe that is not meant to be climbed, but only worshipped, as it is the abode of five treasures of the snows.

Glaciers:
Glaciers are moving mountains of ice. There are many of these in Sikkim, of which the most important are Zemu, the most famous among Himalayan glaciers, Rathong and the Lonak glacier in North Sikkim.

Hot Springs:
Sikkim has many hot springs known for their medicinal value, of which the most important are located at Reshi, Yumthang, Ralang. These hot springs are located at 25 kms from Gyalshing on the river Rangit.

Lakes:
Expect the unexpected in Sikkim. Lakes in this rugged terrain are a visual delight. Spring-fed as well as river-fed, the Tsomogo, Khechoprai, Samiti, Cholamu and Green lakes are among the better known.

Passes:
The mountain ranges are interspersed with the passes which can be used to cross from one side to another. On the Eastern Chola range are situated the famous Nathu La and Jelep La pass, both at an altitude of about 1,15,0000 ft and Bhutah La at an altitude of about 13,000 ft. The first two lead to Tibet and the third to Bhutan.

On West border of Sikkim and Nepal, the most important pass is the Chiwabhangiang, at an altitude of 10,300 ft.

Rivers:
Flowing right across the length of Sikkim is the river Teesta. Teesta originates as a stream from the Cholamu Lake. Meeting Teesta at the border between Sikkim and West Bengal is its major tributary the river Rangeet which originates from the Rathong Glacier. The Teesta finally joins the Brahmaputra in Bangladesh.

Waterfalls
The verdant green landscape of Sikkim is broken only by waterfalls that leap out of the hillside in froths of white. Waterfalls are found almost all over Sikkim but there is a profusion of them in North Sikkim specially on the road between Mangan and Lachung.
